Leadership Services | Product and Engineering, Interim to Retainer | Concept to Cloud
New! Listen to Concept to Cloud - Real stories from the trenches of software engineering

Leadership

Leadership that serves. Whatever the moment needs.

Senior product and engineering leadership inside your team, at the moment your company needs the judgment more than the headcount.

The product-engineering conversation runs steadily inside our own practice, so whichever of us shows up brings that habit with them. Tom leads on engineering, Amelia leads on product, and either can parachute in on their own. The roadmap and the platform end up moving in one conversation instead of two. Decades of shipping to production, most of it in environments where getting it wrong has consequences beyond a bad quarter.

The engagement bends to what the moment needs. Interim during a transition. Fractional for the long haul. Retainer when what you need is quality leadership on-call at the execution points that count, without the full-time bill. Or move between the two of us as the mix of what you need shifts.

The team

Two unique leads. One unified team.

Take one or take both. When the roadmap and the platform need to move as a single conversation, they do. Both run deep on their side, and neither hands you off to a junior once the contract is signed.

Tom Barber

Engineering leadership

Engineering decisions, made accountable.

Technical direction, delivery cadence, hiring shape, reliability, and the cost discipline that gets the infra bill matched to the actual load. The seat runs the practice, so the CTO or the founder can build the next thing.

Tom leads on engineering. Twenty years across aerospace, climate science, institutional research, and regulated fintech, most of it in environments where the release notes and the audit log had to line up.

Amelia Prasad

Product leadership

Product decisions, held in the room.

Roadmap ownership, PM discipline, UX direction, and the stakeholder alignment that stops four teams from pulling on four ends of the same product. The seat runs the practice, so the founder does not have to.

Amelia leads on product. Twenty years across regulated fintech, healthcare, institutional research, and consumer platforms, including engagements where the product decision had to survive both a compliance review and a live user.

Engagement shapes

Interim. Fractional. Retainer. Or move between the two of us.

The right shape depends on what you need, not on what fits our pricing model. Below is what each looks like, and the moments that tend to call for it.

Interim

A senior seat, held for a season.

Short-term seat for a specific gap or transition. Weeks to a few months. Comes in, holds the practice, hands off cleanly. Good for founder transitions, permanent-hire searches, and post-incident recoveries where the team needs a steady hand while the dust settles.

Fractional

A senior seat, held part-time, indefinitely.

Ongoing part-time seat inside your weekly cadence. Held for months or quarters. Good for portfolio companies and teams that need senior judgment in the room but do not yet need a full-time hire. Three-month minimum, fixed monthly fee.

Retainer / advisory

A standing sounding-board.

Regular check-ins, board prep, and being available for the hard calls when they land. Good for founders and CEOs who have their own leadership team but want senior depth on the tap for the decisions no one on the org chart is quite senior enough to answer.

Between us

Move between the two of us as the moment shifts.

The engagement covers both leads and you draw on whichever the moment needs. Product judgment when the roadmap is the question. Engineering judgment when the platform is. The mix bends with what the work asks for, without a renegotiation each time it changes.

What clients see

Six things our clients see. Product or engineering.

These outcomes hold whether you draw on the product lead, the engineering lead, or both. Different disciplines, same shape of value.

Cadence

A rhythm the team plans around.

Meetings that produce decisions, not just status. A weekly beat the team can count on, and check-ins that finish inside the time they took. Nobody wonders when the next call is or what will happen in it.

Plan

Trusted upstream, executable downstream.

A plan the founder trusts and the team can ship against. Sequenced against real constraints, revisited on the cadence, and honest when reality asks for a rewrite. The next quarter reads as a sequence, not a wishlist.

Conversation

Hard trade-offs held in the room.

Timeline versus scope. Product versus engineering. Sales asks versus what the platform can actually do. The trade-offs get made in the room by someone accountable for them, not surfaced in a retro two weeks later.

Focus

A smaller set of the right things.

Pared down to what moves the metric that matters, done well, instead of a broad set of half-things done in parallel. The discipline of saying “not this” so the “this” actually ships.

Organization

Clear ownership, clear paths.

Every stakeholder knows who owns what. Every decision has a route to a person rather than a group chat. New hires join a team with a shape they can read on day one, not one they have to reverse-engineer.

Perspective

Patterns from twenty years of shipping.

What the seat brings back from watching teams ship, stumble, and ship again. Best practices adapted to your shape, not lifted whole from someone else’s playbook. The pattern-recognition it takes a career to build.

Industry-agnostic

Hand off, or stay. Across the sectors we’ve shipped in.

The domain does not limit us. We have led product and engineering across climate science, physics, institutional and government research, healthcare, fintech, and e-commerce. The seat is shaped to your world, not the last client’s.

Start small

Start with a thirty-minute conversation about the shape that fits.

Tell us what you are trying to move and where the seat is missing. We will tell you honestly which shape fits, or whether we are the right team at all.
